300 – This is how many sunny days per year Cordoba has! The city located in central Argentina enjoys summer-like weather until at least late May every year, even though the calendar summer in Argentina ends in March! No wonder that the citizens of the city love spending time outside and that there are lots of fun activities to do and places to visit. Here’s our top 5!
1. Green areas
Parque Sarmiento is the biggest park in Cordoba Capital and offers a variety of activities for locals and tourists alike. Strolling through the park you can find beautiful gardens and ponds that are swimming with ducks, turtles and other types of wildlife. Take the scenic paths through shady forested areas or visit more popular spaces such as the public pool, botanic gardens, Cordoba’s Zoo, and theme park. During the weekends many families and couples can be found lounging around sipping mate, enjoying a family picnic, or simply taking a mid-day siesta.
2. Fun musical events
Cordoba is a city rich with music of all types. Cuarteto, sometimes called cuartetazo, is a famous musical genre born in Córdoba, Argentina. Cuarteto is always upbeat and energizing and in the 1970’s became part of Cordoba’s cultural identity. A popular spot to see Cuarteto is at the Sala del Rey. Of course, there are all types of music style genres that can be found throughout the city. Saturdays and Sundays in the main plazas such as Plaza de Intendencia and Patio Olmos you can join in on the free tango, salsa, and bachata dance parties. To top it off, there are tons of boliches, milongas and bailes that you can attend every night of the week.
3. Diverse architecture
Cordoba Capital is a mix of old and new in terms of architecture. The city was founded by colonial Spanish, Catholics and Jesuits alike. Now it is a thriving metropolis with modern structures amid the timeworn classical cathedrals, synagogues and mosques. Some of most popular examples would be Paseo de Buen Pastor, a converted women’s prison which is now full with art galleries, shops, and cafes, also the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, and the Cañada which is a quaint river that runs through the entire city, connecting everything together.
4. Sierras, lakes and rivers
Of course Cordoba Capital isn’t the only place to visit. Just little under an hour outside of the city, are some great villas that are great to explore! Carlos Paz, for example, is a smaller yet equally vibrant city nestled beside the lake San Roque. It is filled with theatres, shows, nightclubs, and plenty of outdoor activities to do during a weekend getaway. La Cumbra is also a great escape for those who love the outdoor adventure. This quaint village is surrounded by mountains, rivers, and wide open air. Many people like to go for horseback riding, hiking, and even paragliding.
5. History, arts, and artesanía
Along with its architecture, Cordoba is filled with art and artists. For someone who appreciates the classic arts, you will not be disappointed here. There are at least 8 major museums and art galleries that house works of some very influential argentine artists. Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Emilio Caraffa is one of the best contemporary museums in the region. Palacio Ferrerya is also a popular site to visit. What was once a home to an elite aristocratic family has now been converted into Cordoba’s fine arts museum with more than 400 works of arts. The inside of the museum is filled with intricate details in the design, décor and architecture, with surrounding gardens that add the final touch.
But Art in Cordoba doesn’t just have to be found in museums, if you’re into more artisanal artwork and handmade trinkets. Barrio Güemes hosts a ferria every weekend where you can find all types of artwork, handmade knickknacks, and the best part- homemade food! The bars always host live music, special promotions, and a guaranteed good time.
