Voluntariado em um Refeitório, Buenos Aires, Argentina

In Argentina, millions of people are living short of food

Work on this project helping more than 80 “porteños” (people from Buenos Aires) in need. You’ll have your hands full with the many things you can do to improve their quality of life. While there are some discrepances over the veracity of official figures that show a fall in poverty in Argentina, millions of people are living short of food, education, health care and even housing. According to a research done in 2010 by the Argentinean branch of the FLACSO, over 40% of Argentineans were below the poverty line. This number is centainly worrying. Imagine finding youself in the street, with no roof upon your head, no bed to sleep in and no food to eat. A large portion of the homeless population is neither destitute nor vagrant, but just one or two paychecks removed from what had once been a happy home and they have an incredible desire to live independently again. The experienced staff helps providing meals, extensive support programs, counseling for emotional and spiritual strength, legal assistance and advice, and some basic skills and vocational workshops to improve their education and employability. As a volunteer you’ll be welcome to help in area that you feel comfortable at and will be able to propose new ways of helping the people that assist to the shelter everyday. Working on this home you’ll be able to help in the kitchen to prepare them a warm meal that sometimes is their only meal for the day. You can also collaborate in the reception area, setting the tables, washing dishes and everything you see that could need an extra hand.

Join this project and make the difference!

You will build strong relationships among the people involved in the project: the staff and the people in need. You will need to provide support to the staff but specially to the homeless and that could mean even a nice conversation in which they can share their concerns with you and know they are not alone. You’ll be cook and teacher, sympathetic ear and advocate, as well as helping the staff prepare and distribute meals. You may also help with organizing, publicizing, and leading new workshops on everything from job interviewing skills to personal safety. Project staff will also train you for community outreach and advocacy programs to help educate the general public about homelessness, show that there is no shame in needing help, and also reach out to those who are living on the streets to make sure they know help is available. There’s so much that needs to be done and that you can contribute with! This organization receives volunteers constantly and are prepared to help you make the best out of your volunteer experience. You’ll meet lots of people and feel very good once you see all you can do. Man does not live by bread alone, and the homeless population of this South American capital needs more than a warm meal to make it through the toughest times. You can make a difference! Start now!
