Sea Turtle Conservation Volunteer in Quelonios, Costa Rica
Anything that you can bring, will be very helpful to give opportunities those more in need. Volunteer!!
The Quelonios Sea Turtle Project was created as a joint effort with the people of Barra de Pacuare (the local township and its surrounds) for the purpose to preserve and conserve the marine turtles, in particular, Giant Leatherbacks, Hawksbills and Green Sea turtles. One of the most important things in this project is to break the cycle of poaching turtles and seeking viables economic alternatives for the people of Barra de Pacuare. That is the reason why you will work not only in specific tasks related with turtle conservation, you will also work in the generation of new livelihood activities for the community by creating alternative food resources for local consumption. Moreover, the project is making important inroads in developing a model of community-based conservation program to include butterfly gardens, wherein volunteers can aid in the research of butterfly development and preservation, self-sustainable organic vegetable gardens, as well as the construction of community trails. Therefore this project consists of two (2) distinct stages annually: 1. Specific marine turtle conservation projects. 2. Related projects plan for fish and shrimp farming, butterfly gardens, composting projects including worm cultivation, animal husbandry via raising both chickens and hogs, organic and natural gardening.
Join this project and make the difference!
The Sea Turtle Conservation project in Quelonios looks to implement and execute a methodology of control and protection of the marine turtles. At the same time, volunteers get involved in the development of environmental education programs for the nearby communities. You can participate to protect and increase the population of marine turtles that lay eggs on this beach. Construct nurseries to protect the eggs from depredation. Make nocturnal patrols to collect the eggs for hatching, to collect important data such as measurements, and much more! In addition, you can participate in educational activities for the community in order to promote a policy of conservation. Can you imagine waking up with the sound of the ocean, sharing the same environment with locals and finding turtle’s laying eggs? This is where you should come!
